Sometimes I get homesick. Right now, I have such a feeling. Wistfully I think back to my time in fabulous Berlin and back to the real Berlin Currywurst. That fried pork sausage that is normally chopped into pieces and topped with mostly home made ketchup and curry... and where you are asked whether you want it served with or without its intestine. Of course the one without - this is how it is supposed to be. Those who have never eaten such a Berlin Currywurst may ask: why all the fuss? Well, the Berlin Currywurst is different from a normal German Bratwurst topped with some Curryketchup. A Berlin Currywurst is light-years away from that.
You will be in Berlin and don't know where to have your Currywurst? Ok guys, these are our all time favorite places:
# 1:
When I lived in Berlin, Konnopke's was just a stone throw away from my place - on the junction of Schönhauser Allee and Pappelallee in famous Prenzlauer Berg. After an long lasting construction side in this area, Konnopke had to move into a vendor truck, but since a couple of month is back on track in its old home. When ordering your Currywurst, you normally just say" Einmal ohne mit Pommes und Majo" - meaning: one Currywurst without (intestine) with fries and Mayonnaise. But if you are looking for adventure, you can opt for a special hot sauce up to 800,000 Scoville, but I think the spice would kill the taste.... The "Ketschup" as it is called here is of course homemade and the recipe is top secret -like it is in EVERY good Currywurst-Bude. By the way, Konnopke will celebrate their 80th birthday this year.

This is, without any doubt, the counterpart of Konnopke in the former western part of Berlin. Everyone from Kreuzberg or the district of Mitte knows this place, and everyone is cuing up for their Currywurst. At lunchtime, you can find trampers besides cops, or yuppy guys in their best suits. Sometimes, you can already smell the Currywurst when you depart of a metro car at the station of Mehringdamm. Too tempting to walk on by.... The very kind opening hours from 9h in the morning until 5h in the night are quite attractive especially for the party folk from the nearby clubs.

Once upon a time, the former shop owner was the one who invented the Wurst without intestine. It is a very special procedure as the sausage meat has to be pumped into hot water very quickly, otherwise it would just fall apart. A friend of the family, a certain Herta Heuwer then added a spicy red sauce to the sausage, that was in 1949 - and this is (if you believe the old story) the moment when the Currywurst was born. However: The sausages by Maximillian really are outstanding and their sauce is also perfect. Jenke once was a lucky guy to shoot a film about how Currywursts are made and could eat at Maximillian all day! He even made his own sausages and brought them home to me, so that I also was a very lucky girl....

I have never seen any tourists around here. Krasselts is situated in Steglitz, a southern part of formerly West-Berlin and it is far off the beaten track. Since over 50 years, this Currywurst-Bude (Currywurst-Hut) is preferred by many people from the neighborhood. Also here the most dominating is the sauce, which is of course, you can already guess it, homemade and top secret. What is different here is that they do not chop the sausage into many pieces but only cut it into halves and put two wooden sticks into the ends. This is how you eat it. By the way, this Bude only offers the Currywurst without intestine. You can also take home a complete Set of ten Currywurst, Sauce and Curry to surprise your loved ones.

Bier's Kudamm 195
Last but not least my once often visited "Bier's Kudamm 195". Before moving to Prenzlauer Berg, I lived in the chic Charlottenburg in the Western part of Berlin. The famous Kudamm (short for Kurfürstendamm) was just two blocks away and I was close to all the Gucci, Prada and Joop Shops, way too expensive for me. But there was one store which I could visit very often: This great Currywurst Bude. My friend and neighbor Sabin and me were frequent visitors - but back then we did not even know the name of that place and only called it "Curry Carsten", as the cute guy behind the counter was call Carsten. The Currywurst is served on real plates, which is kind of chic and you can even order Champagne if you like.
